Cutting Off Angles
FineSoccer GK Newsletter - Cutting Off Angles
Today's newsletter will show an easy way to work on keepers coming out to cut off angles. Start with 8 balls at 12 yards from the end line and even with the side of the six-yard box with a server and the keeper at the near post.
The server shoots far post and if the keeper slides across the goal mouth, the keeper will almost always get beat. If the keeper comes out to cut off the angle, the keeper increases the probability of making the save.
By coming out to cut off the angle it increases the likelihood of making the save at the near post plus it decreases the likelihood of getting beat near post (see diagram below of what happens when a keeper slides across the goalmouth instead of cutting off the angle).
The server should shoot eight balls from the left side and then eight from the right side. Most shots should be hit far post but if the keeper cheats by sliding across the goal mouth, the server can shoot near post as well.
This is a great activity to work on shot blocking and working on angles.
